Violent Playground Poster

A terrific piece of graphic design for this 1958 British crime drama. Artist Cliff Hirstle blends photographic cut-outs with original painted artwork to excellent effect. The figure with the machine gun was actually a work colleague of Hirstle's. Poster artists would frequently use "stand-ins" for posed photographs when they lacked sufficient reference material (Chantrell for instance, would photograph himself & family members too). See Sim Branaghan's book "British Film Posters" (2006) for more information.

The film was blessed with a strong cast (Peter Cushing, Stanley Baker, Anne Heywood, David McCallum etc). Though set in Liverpool, none of the cast spoke with a Scouse accent. This was not unusual at the time & probably done so as to make films more saleable abroad. "Payroll" (1961) is another example, set in Newcastle but without a sign of a Geordie accent & Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" (1971), though set in rural Cornwall, was similarly accent inaccurate.

Though almost 60 years old, this poster remains in superb original condition.
