West Side Story Poster

Though this colourful poster has often been attributed to Chantrell, we can now confidently put the record straight & give Downton artist Bill Wiggins his due for the illustration. In 1962, Chantrell was employed at the Allardyce advertising agency who did not have the United Artists account & therefore it would have been impossible for him to have worked on this commission. Wiggins' poster design superseded the pre-Oscars poster shown below & was commissioned once "West Side Story" garnered 10 awards at the Oscars, just shortly after the film's release in the UK.

"West Side Story" enjoyed a re-release c'1969 in the UK & a 3rd poster design was employed (see below). This design was based on the Wiggins Oscars poster but placed the swirling dress girl against a bright yellow background. It is believed that this illustration was by Putzu.

The Oscars poster here remains in excellent condition (several small edge nicks & one 1" conservation repair, pin-holes to upper corners & a finger-nail area of paper loss to upper white rim).

Thanks to Messrs Bysouth & Branaghan for their help in clarifying the poster attributions for "West Side Story".
