Red River Poster

A very rare 1948 original release poster for the John Wayne/Howard Hawks epic western "Red River". An attractive design (especially the artwork of the film title) but nonetheless a cheaply produced silk-screen poster. Released in 1948 at a time when rationing & austerity held sway over post-war Britain, this was a typical cinema poster print for the times. When the film was re-released in the 1950's (see image below), the advertising budget for the film was obviously greater & a more "professional" poster design ensued.

The exact meaning of the tag-line in the upper left corner has excited discussion in the past. Borrowed from the design of the corresponding US 1-sheet poster (image below courtesy of emovieposter.com), it is generally believed that the reference is to these westerns all being "epics" both in scope & budget ("Red River" cost $3 million).

The poster has wear & tear (pin-holes, tape marks to rim, surface marks, slight paper loss to fold-lines/corners & various conservation repairs to the reverse). However, as can be seen, the poster still displays to good effect. This is one of the hardest western Quad posters to find. It is not only an early classic western but one that stars the most iconic of all "Western" actors, John Wayne. The Quad for the 1950's re-release appears once or twice a year but I cannot remember seeing this 1st release poster for a decade!
