The Goose Steps Out Poster

UK Quad linen-backed cinema poster for the WWII Ealing comedy "The Goose Steps Out" (1942) starring Will Hay.

Produced by Michael Balcon & directed by Basil Dearden this light-hearted propaganda film pitches Will Hay as a doppelganger for a German spy who is sent to Nazi Germany to discover details of a secret German weapon. The poster proclaims that the film "Pokes Fun At The Hun!" & the imagery reflects this (Will Hay riding a "goose-stepping" goose with a swastika aound its neck). Those associated with the film were taking quite a risk. In 1942 the war was not going well for Britain. The Nazis had pre-arranged lists of people to arrest should they have invaded successfuly. These lists included Jews, Trade Unionists, Communists & others of interest. It is highly likely that Messrs Balcon, Dearden, Hay etc would have been arrested, probably imprisoned & possibly shot (the Nazis were not known for their sense of humour). The film was also noteworthy for giving Peter Ustinov his big screen break (he played a Hitler Youth).

Poster once folded but was linen-backed many years ago. The linen has been trimmed right to the border of the actual poster but the poster remains 100% intact. Prior to backing the poster had pin-holes to corners & some foldline wear but it appears as if NO restoration or over-painting has been required. A fascinating piece of British wartime cinema memorabilia.

NB. A supplementary P&P charge will be required for overseas buyers.
