The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Poster

UK Quad cinema poster for the controversial horror film "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974).

With lashings of gruesome intent & prolonged terror "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was extremely challenging for the BBFC who repeatedly refused to award the film an "X" rating. At one point, the head of the BBFC James Ferman referred to the film as a "pornography of terror". In 1975, however, the Greater London Council granted the film an "X" certificate on the back of 28 sceconds of cuts. A small print run of "X" certificate "London" posters were printed (see the atached example for reference).

It had long been held that the provinces were less cosmopolitan/sophisticated than the capital & indeed the vast majority of local councils refused prermission for the film to be shown. An "X" certificate "Local" poster, however, was printed for the very few local councils prepared to allow screenings of this highly controversial feature. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was briefly available uncensored in video form in the early 1980's but the furore over "Video Nasties" resulted in new legislation & the film was effectively banned again. Given the very limited viewing opportunities, relatively few "Texas Chainsaw.." posters were printed. Both versions are scarce but the "Local" version is scarcer than the "London" version.

Poster folded with two small conservation repairs to foldline separations, minor marks to corners & a small spot stain to the lower white mid-rim. Although the film was genuinely shocking at the time, it is now considered to be a classic of the type.

NB. A supplementary P&P charge will be required for overseas buyers.
