Antony and Cleopatra

Original Vic Fair concept painted artwork (31"x 32") for the Quad cinema poster for the historical drama "Antony and Cleopatra" (1972).

Described by Sim Branaghan as "a design genius", Vic Fair was often used as an "ideas man" creating poster designs which were subsequently illustrated by other artists. Fair frequently collaborated in this regard with both Brian Bysouth & Renato Fratini. As comparision with Fratini's printed "Antony and Cleopatra" Quad poster (shown for reference) indicates, Fair's illustration of Antony Cleopatra on this concept artwork made it to the final mix!

This large artwork consists of painted tracing paper (colour wash & pen & ink illustrations) applied to "Legion" artboard. The horizontal illustration of a battle scene is on gloss card. A fascinating early concept work which Fair subsequently developed.
