Birkenhead Victorian Calendar Poster

These are NOT cinema posters but two Victorian Calendar posters (14 1/2"x 22" & 14"x 18" approx) being interesting pieces of commercial advertising with lots of social history, these both dating from 1891.

It appears as if local companies & tradesmen would commission these calendar posters approaching Christmas. It is likely that the artwork designs were in template form & the commissioning business would have their details added. Presumably these calendars were then given to favoured clients. The "God's Acre" poster was issued on behalf of "Alfred Baistow, Wholesale & Retail Pork Butcher" of Birkenhead & the "Queen Of My Heart" poster was by "George F. Smart, Family Grocer & Provision Merchant" also of Birkenhead.

Both posters with some rim damage including some paper loss & with several conservation tape repairs to splits/tears to the reverse etc but both display well & are fascinating early examples of commercial poster advertising with Birkenhead local interest.
