Carry On Screaming Poster
Linen-backed UK Quad cinema poster for the Carry On Hammer horror spoof "Carry On Screaming" (1966) with poster artwork by Tom Chantrell.
NB. Whilst this is a rare Quad title, this example is a "Holy Grail" early print run example! This, the early print run for the premiere & West End release etc features Chantrell's original title lettering with a small "a" in "Screaming". For some reason the distributors didn't like Chantrell's innovative "jagged edge" typography of "Screaming" & so he changed the design using capital letters instead. The vast majority of all surviving "Carry On Screaming "Quads are large "A" posters ie, first release but from the much larger later print runs. This small "a" example is a genuine rarity (we show an example of the more "common" large "A" later prints for comparison.
Chantrell really enjoyed himself with this poster composition, delivering a wonderfully colourful & OTT design that could not have failed to grab attention & raise a smile. The haunted house, lightning bolt, ghoulish green smoke, dastardly poised syringes, maniacal expressions & clashing colour scheme, all scream horror whilst audience familiarity with the Carry On genre would have reassured viewers that a comic feast was on offer! A superb piece of commercial art.
The poster is linen-backed. Prior to backing this poster was folded with a few minor edge nicks but still in excellent condition. Restoration (a few foldline touch-ins) has been minimal. The poster displays to superb effect as seen (NO Photoshop enhancement used in the images). For an idea of relative value, a large "A" later print "Carry On Screaming" Quad just sold at SAS auctions (7/26) for £1,800 Hammer - £2,200 with buyer's premium.
