The film was based on the true story of a 1962 breakout attempt from Alcatraz. Though it was assumed that the three men who eluded the guards of Alcatraz, drowned in the icy waters of San Francisco Bay, the film leaves open the romantic possibility that the escape architect, Frank Morris (Eastwood) escaped. The film was shot on location at Alcatraz.
