La Verite Poster
A rare Quad poster for the 1960 French film "La Verite", starring Brigitte Bardot.
The poster was illustrated by Vic Fair, being one of the artist's earliest poster designs. Fair was given a reference photo of Bardot from the film which essentially he then "copied". It was a source of continued puzzlement to the artist that he received an award for this particular poster "design" but it certainly captures the essence of the sultry Bardot, the pouting lips to the fore. We show the Vic Fair original artwork for reference below.
Interestingly, the distributors, Gala Films, commissioned two Quad poster designs. The second (shown below courtesy of ewbankauctions.co.uk), takes a more populist teen-orientated approach (artwork probably by Fred Payne). The Vic Fair design, though oozing sex appeal, was probably chosen to attract a more high-brow audience. Irrespective, the print-run for both these poster designs, would have been very small, foreign sub-titled films such as this, playing mostly on the very restricted metropolitan art-house circuit. This Vic Fair variant is extremely rare.
The poster has been linen-backed. It was irregularly folded, has minor paper loss to upper left corner & at two points to left rim. The biggest fault was an 11" tear running from bottom left rim into the black background. Since there was no paper loss here, this has been restored to very good effect & the poster displays extremely well.
