The Horror of Frankenstein

Rare Chantrell prototype painted artwork (23 5/8"x 31 5/8" overall) for the Hammer horror film "The Horror of Frankenstein" (1970).

Chantrell was Hammer Studios most important poster artist. He dominated Hammer poster production 1965-70 creating not only Quad posters but pre-production artwork too. After Hammer's distribution deal with Warner-Pathe finished in 1969, Chantrell's work for Hammer reduced though he still continued to supply concept art & painted both the Quads for "Dracula AD 1972" & "Satanic Rites of Dracula" (1973). "The Horror of Frankenstein" was released as part of a double-bill with "The Scars of Dracula" with Mike Vaughan art in 1970 (see the attached for reference), so Chantell's concept piece here was almost certainly undertaken in 1969.

Although this artwork was not ultimately used for the printed Quad, it is a finished artwork & the artist has signed the piece to the lower left. The artwork is gouache laid to artboard which has been subsequently laid to a backing card. This item was framed by Chantrell & was displayed in his home. Interestingly Chantrell has extended the lightning bolt through Frankenstein's head out & across the black backing card too.

Although we have sold a quantity of Chantrell artwork since we set up the Chantrell website in 2012 (see https://www.chantrellposter.com/) there is no more new artwork left to add. When we sold rare surviving pieces of Chantrell Hammer artwork in the past they have fetched thousands of Pounds. The most recent comparable piece in the market was the Chantrell concept art for "Frankenstein Created Woman" (1967) sold by Ewbanks Auctions in May 2024 for £10,400
