Above Us The Waves Poster

UK Quad cinema poster for the WWII film "Above Us The Waves" (1955), the film starring John Mills, John Gregson & Donald Sinden & the poster illustrated by the Italian artist Nicola Simbari.

Following the end of WWII in 1945 Britain was victorious but broken & near bust. Austerity & rationing reigned & the cinema was the key form of entertainment available for the masses. Since the nation had all been deeply affected by the war it was hardly surprising that film-nakers flocked to the subject with plenty of stories of wartime heroics available. "Above Us The Waves" recounted the daring mini-sub attack by British commandoes on the German battleship, the "Tirpitz" in the Norwegian fjords. The film was a box-office hit, being one of three WWII films in the UK top six in 1955 (the others being "The Dam Busters", "The Colditz Story"). Interesting to note that although it was only ten years since the end of the war, both the Quad posters for "Above Us The Waves" & "The Dam Busters" were illustrated by Italian artists.

Poster folded with some old tape repairs to the reverse, pin-holes to corners, edge nicks & a stain to right mid side (this does not show through to the front). Irrespective, the poster still displays to excellent effect. No Photoshop has been used: the colours are as bold & vibrant as shown.
