Aylesbury Amersham Victorian Calendar Poster

NOT a cinema poster but a Victorian Calendar poster (15"x 18 1/2" approx) & an interesting piece of commercial advertising with lots of social history, this one c' 1884.

It appears as if local companies & tradesmen would commission these calendar posters approaching Christmas. It is likely that the artwork designs were in template form & the commissioning business would have their details added to the blank box. Presumably these calendars were then given to favoured clients. This particular calendar poster was for Joseph Kingham & Sons, "Wholesale & Family Grocers", with outlets in Aylesbury, Brentford, Amersham & Watlington. The calendar has a Christmas theme & typical for the times has a sentimental outlook, this one entitled "Holy Work & Loving Hands".

Poster with some rim damage, slight paper loss to top right corner & several conservation tape repairs to the reverse. Nonetheless it displays well, could be restored if required & represents an early piece of commercial advertising with lots of social, fashion & regional interest.
