Far From The Madding Crowd Poster

UK Quad cinema poster for "Far From The Madding Crowd" (1967) starring Julie Christie. The film was a faithful interpretation of the Thomas Hardy novel sumptuously photographed by Nicolas Roeg. The poster art more than holds it's own, Chantrell's depiction of Julie Christie, her windswept blonde hair & piercing blue eyes, being particularly arresting.

Although the Quad poster design is based on Howard Terpning's artwork from the American poster campaign (see the US 1-Sheet poster courtesy of emovieposter) it is believed that Chantrell re-painted & adapted the design for the Quad poster. There are a number of subtle differences between the US 1-Sheet & the Quad most notably the depiction of Peter Finch in the foreground. When Chantrell re-formatted other artists work like this he did not add his own signature. However, this was a Warner-Pathe film & Allardyce (Chantrell's ad agency) held the Warner-Pathe account. We also have original Chantrell "Far From.." artwork on the Chantrell website (https://www.chantrellposter.com/Far-From-The-Madding-Crowd-Chantrell-Artwork-1967-Original/1367). (this artwork is believed to have been used for the UK Campaign Book or Synopsis for the film & as it is all Chantrell's own work he signed this piece).

Poster folded with several pin-holes to corners/rim but overall in very good condition.
