Gone With The Wind Poster

Rare original UK Double-Crown merchandise tie-in poster for "Gone With The Wind" (1939), this poster dating from the 1952 re-release of the film.

This is a fascinating piece of cinema & social history, being one of the earliest merchandise tie-in posters we have ever seen. "Fairy Dyes" were developed specifically to help "refresh" old clothes during the post-war period of rationing & austerity (note the "Your Clothing Problems" title of the poster). Although clothes rationing ended in 1949, other foodstuffs & commodities were rationed thereafter, being phased out up to 1958. Times  were tough. In the immediate post-war period GWTW was re-released in 1945, 1948, 1952 & 1957 (dates courtesy of Film Historian Sim Branaghan) & it is believed that this poster dates c'52.

Obviously the prime purpose of a cinema poster was to advertise the film but we are now familiar with both merchandising tie-ins & product placements in various films. It is remarkable, however, to find evidence of such an early poster merch tie-in like this & one too that sheds light on a particularly difficult time in the post-war recovery of Britain ("Make Do & Mend" was the mantra of the time).

Poster folded with light creasing & a small sticker to the reverse. A fascinating poster! If interested we also currently have these later GWTW posters: https://www.moviepostermem.com/Gone-With-The-Wind-Poster/61758https://www.moviepostermem.com/Gone-With-The-Wind-Poster/62424
