Lion of the Desert
Original Vic Fair highly finished concept artwork (25"x 32") for the epic US-Libyan co-production "Lion Of The Desert" (1980).
Based on the true story of Omar Mukhtar, the Libyan freedom fighter who fought against the colonisation of his country by Mussolini's fascists during the 1920's-30's, this expensive production ($35 million) was largely funded by the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The heavyweight cast also included John Gielgud, Raf Vallone & Andrew Keir. This highly finished Vic Fair prototype contains most of the key elements on the printed Quad poster (Quad image shown courtesy of emovieposter) including the brutish figure of Oliver Reed as Governor Rodolfo Graziani, to the upper an effigy of The Italian dictator Benito Mussolini played by Rod Steiger & an image of the imperious figure of Anthony Quinn as Omar Mukhtar. Interestingly the artwork carries the working title of the film, it eventually being released just as "Lion Of The Desert".
This is a typically large near scale Vic Fair artwork. The mixed media artwork is on black card with various cut-out additions (all artwork) & this is loosely fixed to a backing board with a tracing paper overlay. An accomplished piece of poster design demonstrating Fair's artistic prowess & an interesting example from one of several Western-Middle Eastern co-productions that appeared in the late 1970's-early 80's.
