Passage Home

Rare original painted poster artwork (13"x 16" overall) for the British nautical adventure "Passage Home" (1955), the film starring Anthony Steel, Peter Finch & Diane Cilento.

The artwork is by the Italian artist Silvano "Nano" Campeggi. Being a Rank film, the poster advertising would have been handled by the Downton ad agency. Eric Pulford, who headed Downton, would frequently commission Rome based artists (including Nano) for work like this. "Nano" became a favourite illustrator for Hollywood films, his back-catalogue included posters for over 60 Oscar winning films. For some other examples of his work, please see: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls029793626/ We also currently have the Quad poster for this film available too: https://www.moviepostermem.com/Passage-Home-Poster/63061

The "Passage Home" artwork is redolent with sexual tension & danger, reflecting the core theme of the film: a tagline for the film was "A Desirable Woman...more hazardous than the raging sea!". The artwork appears to be gouache with text strip add-ons, with a paper mount, all affixed to artboard. There is an original acetate overlay which carries annotations for the printer. Attached is also text for "PETER FINCH" which indicates the lead order was being re-configured.

Apart from the three leads (both Finch & Cilento being Australian actors), the film was stocked with a host of other well-known British character actors: Patrick McGoohan, Sam Kydd, Bryan Forbes, Gordon Jackson etc. Director, Roy Ward Baker later became a stalwart in the horror genre for both Hammer & Amicus Studios.

"Nano" poster artwork is rarely seen in the market & this is a fascinating early example.

NB. A supplementary P&P charge will be required for overseas buyers.
