Rockets Galore Poster
A charming piece of poster illustration for this light-hearted 1958 British comedy. Based on a story by Compton Mackenzie, "Rockets Galore" had more than a nod in the direction of the preceding Mackenzie cinematic adaptation, "Whiskey Galore" (1949). The film wasa based ion the premise of an island in the middle of the Atlantic being selected by the Govt as a missile base (it was actually filmed on the Isle of Barra, Scotland).
The cartoon-type illustration has been attributed to the Italian artist Michele Majorana. Rank's ad agency Downton contained other skillful cartoonists (ie, Pulford & Stockle) but Pulford was well known for usuing Rome based Italian poster artists for various commissions, eventually binging both Putzu & Fratini over to work in London.
The poster has pin-holes to corners, minor paper loss to top right corner & a Maltese censor's stamp bottom left corner. Overall still in very good condition.
