Rockets Galore Poster
A charming piece of poster illustration for this light-hearted 1958 British comedy. Based on a story by Compton Mackenzie, "Rockets Galore" had more than a nod in the direction of the preceding Mackenzie cinematic adaptation, "Whiskey Galore" (1949). The film was based on the premise of an island in the middle of the Atlantic being selected by the Govt. as a missile base (it was actually filmed on the Isle of Barra, Scotland).
The cartoon-type illustration is by the Italian artist Michele Majorana (who is also believed to have been responsible for the alternate Quad design too - http://www.moviepostermem.com/Rockets-Galore-Poster/59250). Rank's ad agency Downton contained other skillful cartoonists (ie, Pulford & Stockle) but Pulford was well known for usuing Rome based Italian poster artists for various commissions, eventually binging both Putzu & Fratini over to work in London.
The poster has pin-holes to corners, slight foldline wear & a few scattered light surface marks.
