The Black Windmill Poster

UK 1-Sheet cinema poster for the Michael Caine crime-thriller "The Black Windmill" (1974) with poster illustration by Angelo Cesselon.

This is a fabulous piece of poster illustration. Although not based in London (unlike Fratini & Putzu), Cesselon was one of the main Italian illustrators of British film posters 1950's-70's, probably best known for "Reach For The Sky" (1956) & "Hell Drivers" (1957). This illustration for "The Black Windmill" is retro in its appeal & is in complete contrast to the Quad poster for this film (see image attached). Though the Quad may have looked more "modern" at the time, this composition pales in comparison with Cesselon's 1-Sheet design. It is interesting how different these two posters are. As 1-Sheets were mostly used for the export market maybe it was felt that Cesselon's design would be better suited for this task?

Poster folded with pin-holes to corners, 1 1/2" tear to upper right corner, a couple of small edge nicks & light foldline wear. Not perfect but a scarce poster for this title & in our opinion a far better & more interesting design than that on the corresponding Quad poster.
