The Gorgon
Original Vic Fair finished painted artwork (20"x 25" overall) for the Hammer horror film "The Gorgon" (1964), this for the 1982 UK Video release.
Vic Fair had an interesting association with Hammer, producing finished Quad artwork for "Countess Dracula" (1971) & "Vampire Circus" (1972), plus concept artwork for the likes of "Frankenstein & The Monster From Hell" (1974), "The Legend of "The 7 Golden Vampires" (1974) & "The Lady Vanishes" (1979). This particular finished artwork, however dates from a 1982 UK (uncertified) RCA/Columbia video release of the film & the same artwork was used again for the 1987 certified release of the film (see image attached).NB. The Marcus Hearn 2010 book "The Art of Hammer" also credits Vic Fair for the Quad artwork for "The Gorgon" (1964) but this is not something we can corroboate currently.
Needless to say any Vic Fair Hammer artwork is highly sought after & this is a piece not seen in the market before. In 2024 Vic Fair concept artwork for "Frankenstein & The Monster From Hell" (1974) fetched £2,470 in a Ewbanks auction & in 2014 Propstore sold finished Vic Fair video artwork for "The Revenge of Frankenstein" (1958) for £1,920. This item came from the artists own collection. A rare opportunity to acquire an original piece of Vic Fair Hammer artwork, Fair being one of the key Hammer artists in the 1970's.
The artwork consists of a painted cut-out with artwork in mixed media applied to artboard that has been painted with a cream background. An acetate overlay is also present (seen rolled at the upper).
