The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Poster

UK Quad linen-backed cinema poster for the classic Tony Richardson British New Wave film "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" (1962).

Spawned from the wave of post-war early 60's radicalism that embraced gritty reality, rejected prior social norms & celebrated anti-establishment values, "The Loneliness.." was a trail-breaker, established Tom Courtney as a star & epitomised the cult of the "angry young man". This was an important film & a cultural totem.

The poster is a design classic too. Created by the doyen of mid-century cinema poster design SJ Woods (advertising director at Ealing Studios), this startling composition would have looked very different to the more literal painted depictions on most Quads at the time. The early Pop-Art influeced design offers minamalism, geometric shapes, clashing colours & the angst ridden youth bullseye centred! A standout piece of poster design.

Prior to being backed this poster was in excellent condition. There has been minimal restoration only (a couple of foldline wear touch-ins) & this is NOT one of the airbrush re-painted Quads that often re-appear after backing. An exceptional poster.
