The Seven Year Itch Poster

UK Double-Crown first release cinema poster for the Marilyn Monroe classic "The Seven Year Itch" (1955) with poster artwork by Arnold Beauvais (father of Tom Beauvais).

Described as "exceedingly rare" by Heritage Auctions this Double-Crown poster references one of the most iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, with her dress billowing up around her thighs. This scene from the film is arguably one of the most memorable images from 20th century cinema too! Arnold Beauvais illustrated the poster in a job which was initially scheduled for Tom Chantrell (see Sim Branaghan's book "British Film Posters" 2006). This was apparently Beauvais senior's last cinema poster composition but in a nice touch of familial continuity, Tom Beauvais (Arnold's son) helped with the lettering on the poster (Tom at the early stage of his own career as a cinema poster artist). Although a matter of personal taste, we'd argue that this British composition is superior to the American equivalent (see the US 1-Sheet poster for comparison - image courtesy of emovieposter).

Poster folded & remains in good unrestored condition. There are pin-holes to corners & slight paper loss to two corners. There is a little staining to the outer white rim & minor foldline wear. Overall, however, the poster displays very nicely as is, though could be further improved with backing. Although an alternative double-crown exists with a reduced colour palette, this is a poster from the re-release & the example here is the poster from the debut release of the film in the UK in 1955. For an idea of relative value Heritage Auctions have only ever auctioned two such Double-Crowns, the last (in similar condition) fetching the equivalent of £2,700 in 2018. A genuinely rare piece of original Marilyn Monroe memorabilia.
