A Man Wants To Get To Germany Poster
Original German 1934 cinema poster (13 1/2"x 18 1/2") from a poignant time in history, advertising films screenings at five Berlin (Neukolln district) cinemas during the week of 24th Aug 1934, these being the German propaganda film "A Man Wants To Get To Germany" (1934) & the Hungarian musical "Die Csardasfurstin" (1927).
Having come to power in 1933 the Nazis affected every aspect of German life, including the cinema. Directors/actors who showed non-compliance with Nazi dictats were frequently arrested & imprisoned, others collaborated willingly or begrudgingly. The film "A Man Wants To Get To Germany" recounted the tale of a German in S.America trying to get back to fight for the Fatherland in the 1914-18 War. The propaganda objectives of this were obvious as Germany re-armed & the Nazis built the narrative of a Master Race facing threats & challenges on all sides. Director Paul Wegener (1874-1948) had a distinguished pre-War career in silent films but was favoured by the Nazis & participated in a number of German propaganda films like "A Man Wants..". Although apparently a Nazi supporter, Wegener was rumoured to have privately supported resistance geroups & in the immediate poster-War period Wegener did much to restore cultural life in West Berlin.
A poster with geat historical significance, almost 100 years old & one which also hints at the complex, torturous & obviously heart-wrenching moral choices that many German citizens were faced with as the totalitarian Nazi regime came to power in 1930's Germany.
Poster folded with several small edge nicks (we can close these with conservation tape if required but currently we've left this poster in original condition).
