Phantom India Poster
Original UK Double-Crown bespoke poster (19 1/2"x 29 1/2") for The Gate Cinema, Notting Hill, for a special screening of the Louis Malle film "Phantom India" (1969).
The film was actually a Louis Malle 7-part mini-series made for French TV but shown on the BBC as "Louis Malle's India". The series focused on minority groups in India & though highly regarded by critics it caused something of an international incident as the India Govt felt it dwelt too much on the impoverished!
Clearly only a tiny number of these posters would have been printed. Apart from the explosion of colour (very 1960's) the text "Take A Trip..." was also loaded with contemporary 60's connotations that would not have been missed by The Gate's cosmopolitan clientelle. The Gate was one of London's oldest cinemas at the time, dating from 1911.
Poster rolled with a little pin-hole damage to the corners. A fantastic piece of Louis Malle memorabilia, a piece of Indian cinematic history & a great memento from the cultural melting pot of "Swinging 60's" London.
