A Pictorial History of War Films

Original Tom Chantrell painted artwork (19"x 32") for the book jacket for "A Pictorial History of War Films" (1974).

Apart from two small photo additions, everything here is painted artwork, Chantrell capturing perfectly the likes of John Wayne, Kenneth Moore, Donald Sutherland, Richard Todd, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Gregory Peck etc from various war films. Chantrell, created a number of Quads for iconic war films ("The Longest Day" 1962 & "Patton" 1970 being just two) so he was an excellent choice for this book cover commission. Chantrell's artwork bring the characters to life in a colourful celebration of this genre of film that was so popular during the 1950's & 1960's. As the image of the front cover of the book jacket shows, this artwork was for both front & back covers with the design carried on the inside of the jacket to the front cover too.

The artwork is principally gouache laid to "Legion" artboard. A fantastic Chantrell piece which highlights his strength for facial illustration & presents a panoply of the great & good from the war film genre.
