A Touch Of Zen Poster

UK Quad cinema poster for the little-known but important Taiwanese "Wuxia" film "A Touch Of Zen" (1981).

Directed by ex-Shaw Brothers (HK) staffer King Hu, the film was made & released in two parts. Although not a commercial success in either Taiwan or Hong Kong, this film is regarded as a significant film in the Wuxia (martial arts & chivalry) canon. The critical plaudit by the 1970's British film critic Alexander Walker hints of the quality: one ten-minute sword fight in a bamboo forest took 25 days to shoot & was choreographed in balletic style! The film remained relatively unknown in the West until it was released as a single entity & exhibited at the Cannes Film Festival 1975 where it was critically applauded.

This poster is believed to date from a limited UK release in 1975, the silkscreen nature of the poster suggesting a tiny print run only (for screenings at arthouse/college cinemas rather than via the big screen circuits) - in 26 years of collecting & dealing this is the only example of this poster we have ever seen.

Poster un-folded with some rim wear but still displays to excellent effect. A scarce poster for what was an important Taiwanese film & a significant early example of the King-Fu phemomenon that became so popular in the West in the 1970's.
