Between The Lines Poster
UK Quad cinema poster for the American comedy-drama about an alternative newspaper in Boston, "Between The Lines" (1977).
It is fascinating to see how differently this poster was marketed in the UK vs US. In America the 1-Sheet poster by Richard Amsel (courtesy of emovieposter) took a fairly orthodox approach with painted depictions of key cast members surrounding the newspaper office. X3 Posters in the UK, however, came up with a far grittier design set against an extensive b/w print background (a technique that appears in several Tom Chantrell posters) with a splash of day-glo colour illustrating Michael J Pollard. The mood of the Quad is certainly far more edgy than that the US 1-Sheet & has echoes of the contemporary design ethos of Punk. This must have been a deliberate ploy by the UK distributors as X3 Posters were known for their day-glo Punk poster designs.
There is a slightly different version of the UK Quad bearing more coloured splashes of day-glo but with text from US newspapers whereas our version has text from various UK publications. Originally the poster carried bespoke cinema text in the bottom right corner ("Screen On The Hill", near Belsize Park & now known as the "Everyman") but this has been blanked out. "Between The Lines" had a limited run in the US market & a tiny release in the UK so this is a genuinely scarce poster.
Poster folded with minor wear & blanked text as described above.
