Groundhog Day

Original Vic Fair concept artwork (24"x 33") for the Quad poster for "Groundhog Day" (1993) the American comedy starring Bill Murrray & Andie MacDowell.

Although ultimately this design was un-used (the Quad was based on the US poster campaign - see attached image courtesy of emovieposter) it presents an interesting image of Murray struggling with time distortion, a Groundhog gleefully pulling him backwards. By the 1990's Quad posters were almost uniformly photographic designs. Obviously poster artists had to adapt & most of Fair's work from 1990 onwards was photo-based. This concept piece, however, is a hybrid as the entirety of Bill Murray's body (his face is photographic), his coat & the Groundhog are all comprised of painted/drawn artwork superimposed on the photographic image of the misshapen clock & Andie MacDowell.

The mixed media artwork is based on card affixed to polyboard with an acetate overlay.
