Old Compton Street Soho Poster

Original "Old Compton Street" (1960) Soho, Post Office poster (29"x 36") with artwork by Peter Edwards (1934-2017).

This poster was commissioned by the GPO to encourage the public to use the right "District Number" when posting (in this case it was "W.1."). A fabulous piece of Expressionism picturing a specific Soho location with actual shops etc from the time. The artwork features a blue "bubble" car & a cordoned bombsite to the left. On the hoardings are several posters, one clearly theatrical. Post-war advertising posters, especially cinema posters (ie, Quads) were frequently bill-posted on such hoardings & can be seen in both period photographs & also in old British films, especially those set in London. Although this is not a film poster per se, it has definite connections to the world of cinema poster advertising, not least because Soho was the very centre of the British cinema industry (various studio distributors, ad agencies, poster artists etc based here).

The poster is unfolded with a few minor edge nicks & a couple of small areas of "rippling" but overall in very good condition. A fabulous piece of commercial advertising & a great artistic snapshot of early 1960's Soho!

NB. A supplementary P&P charge will be required for overseas buyers.
