Pumuckl And The Blue Gremlin

Painted artwork (11"x 15 1/4" overall) from the German film "Pumuckl and The Blue Gremlin" (1994) by Brian Bagnall.

"Pumuckl" is a German mythical creature, invisible to humans except an old carpenter with whom he lives. Originally conceived by Ellis Kaut as a radio series in 1961, the Pumuckl phenomenon developed in books, a TV series, a musical & in three films. Graphic artist Barbara von Johnson initially created the visual image of Pumuckl & later the British illustrator, Brian Bagnall was responsible for artwork in Pumuckl books & films including all the artwork for the film "Pumuckl And The Blue Gremlin" aka "Pumuckl Und Der Blaue Klabauter" (1994).

This & the other Pumuckl material we are selling came via the collection of Tom Chantrell (see: https://www.chantrellposter.com/). At the end of his career in the early 1990's, Chantrell illustrated several German film posters alongside the video artwork that made up the bulk of his work. Although we do not have any Chantrell Pumuckl artwork it is likely that Chantrell was sent this material for a prospective commission that did not eventually materialise.

Artwork laid to artboard & consists of two colour photographs of Gustl Bayrhammer in the role of Meister Eder, upon which two painted cut-out figures of Pumuckl have been superimposed with other small paint work additions. A pencil annotated cover overlay is also in place. This is a poignant piece as Gustl Bayrhammer, who was so closely associated with the Pumuckl franchise, died shortly after making this film.
