The Blue Angel Poster

UK Double-Crown (DC) cinema poster for "The Blue Angel" (1959) with poster illustration by Jack Hubbard.

Until recently Hubbard was an unknown artist but as a freelancer he worked extensively for 20th Century-Fox & various independent distributors such as Gala & New Realm. Hubbard was most active in the 1950's till the early 70's.

As was often the case, different artists were used to create the Quad & double-Crown posters. In this re-make of the Marlene Dietrich "Blue Angel" (1930), Tom Chantrell provided the illustration for the Quad (see image attached for reference). It is interesting to note the different stylistic approach by each artist (this was in part influenced by the budget available, the Quad paying far more than the commission for the DC). In both cases, however, the artists hone in on the selling features of May Britt's long legs & her garter!
