The Exorcist Poster

An unusual bespoke UK cinema poster (12 1/2"x 19 1/2") for two Birmingham ABC cinemas for the release of The Exorcist (1973).

"The Exorcist" was one of a slew of cinema releases in the 1970's that caused notoriety & controversy (others including "A Clockwork Orange" 1971, "Straw Dogs" 1971, "The Devils" 1971, "Taxi Driver" 1976, "The Life of Brian" 1979 etc). In the more permissive climate of the times, film-makers began pushing the envelope in terms of sex, violence, blasphemy & generally more adult themes.

This poster illustrates an interesting feature of film distribution at the time. Although the UK general release of "The Exorcist" commenced on 14th March 1974, films at this time were shown across the country in stages (premiere followed by West End release, major metriopolitan centres etc etc). Smaller towns would often not receive a major film for months after the initial release. In the case of these two Birmingham cinemas, however, "The Exorcist" was made available just several weeks after the initial release, this reflecting the "second city" status of Birmingham in the UK (image of the ABC New Street cinema courtesy of Allen Eyles).

Poster rolled with two horizontal folds to upper & several small creases. Being a bespoke cinema poster, this would have been printed in tiny numbers only & is thus scarce!
