West Side Story Poster
US 1-Sheet linen-backed cinema poster for the sublime musical "West Side Story" (1961), this being the rarer early pre-Oscars version of the poster.
The film marked a radical departure from the standard "musical" injecting serious social comment about race relations into the art form. The jazz influenced musical score by Leonard Bernstein reflected the multi-ethnic New York setting too. The film was an enormous box-office & critical success winning ten Oscars! Joseph Caroff's very contemporary design aligns the film title with a NY tenament fire escape. Interestingly the two pairs of dancers pictured are shown in both black & white. A suitably classy poster design that has ever enduring appeal.
Prior to backing the poster was in very good condition. Very little restoration has been required (three small areas of air-brush to the outer white rim & a few tiny touch-ins to foldline wear). Otherwise there are several tiny scuffs but these are unobtrusive & the poster displays very well. The linen has been trimmed to within several mm to the outer rim of the poster so there is minimal overhang.
NB. A supplementary P&P charge will be required for overseas buyers.
