Breaking Glass

Original Tom Chantrell finished painted artwork (21"x 26") for the UK Quad poster for "Breaking Glass" (1980).

Marketed as the first "Punk Musical" & starring singer Hazel O'Connor, "Breaking Glass" was designed to cash-in on the new shift in popular culture. The film was emboldened with the presence of the likes of Phil Daniels & Jon Finch. Chantrell puns the film title with a backdrop of smashing glass & the tagline "The experience is SHATTERING!", communicating a hip sense of energy, dynamism & violence. A fantastic example of Chantrell's artistry!

At the time this film was released Hazel O'Connor was riding high with the film soundtrack peaking at #5 in the album charts & her single "Eighth Day" also hitting #5. Likewise, Phil Daniels was on a roll & following his starring role in "Quadrophenia" (1979), he co-starred in both the gritty "Scum" (1979) & in "Zulu Dawn" (1979) before making "Breaking Glass". Both were canny recruits by the Producers, who included playboy, Dodi Fayed. The gouache artwork is laid to "Daler" artboard with printed strips of text overlaid on an acetate overlay. There is a further paper overlay & this & the margin of the artwork carry annotations penned by the artist.
