Doctor Faustus Poster

Rare UK Quad cinema poster for the Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor film of "Doctor Faustus" (1967).

The film was based on a three week theatrical performance by the Oxford University Dramatic Society which bizarrely starred both Burton & Taylor! Richard Burton won a six month RAF scholarship to attend Exeter College at Oxford University in 1943. He was later persuaded to participate in "Doctor Faustus" by the plays director, Professor Nevill Coghill who had previously been Burton's tutor at Oxford. Burton may have been struck between the parallels of the Faustian story (selling a soul in return for earthly delights) & his own life: the once feted classical theatre actor shunning the boards for Hollywood movie stardom!

Although the poster has been modified with stencilled details for the "Empire Sunderland" at the top, it is clearly a professional Quad poster (printed by "Lonsdale and Bartholomew") & presumably was a Style-B variant (see the more common Style-A Quad poster attached for comparison - image courtesy of emovieposter). We have never seen this Style-B poster before & can find no other "Doctor Faustus" poster using this design & artwork.

Poster folded with some pin-hole damage to corners/rim but otherwise displays to excellent effect. A rare poster with a fascinating back story.
