The Lion Of The Desert
Original Vic Fair concept artwork (22"x 24") for the epic US-Libyan co-production "Lion Of The Desert" (1980).
Based on the true story of Omar Mukhtar, the Libyan freedom fighter who fought against the colonisation of his country by Mussolini's fascists during the 1920's-30's, this expensive production ($35 million) was largely funded by the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The heavyweight cast also included John Gielgud, Raf Vallone & Andrew Keir. This early Vic Fair prototype shows Oliver Reed as the brutal Italian Governor Rodolfo Graziani with an image of Anthony Quinn as Omar Mukhtar looming above & a desert battleground to the fore (these elements appear on the finished Quad - image shown courtesy of emovieposter).
The artwork is on paper affixed to artboard & is a mixture of colour wash & the pen/ink illustration much favoured by Fair. Unusually for such a Vic Fair concept, the entire piece is illustrated "as one" without cut-out additions being superimposed. An interesting piece from one of several Western-Middle Eastern co-productions that appeared in the late 1970's-early 80's.
