The Man With The Golden Arm Poster
US 1-Sheet linen-backed poster for "The Man With The Golden Arm" (1955) with classic poster illustration by Saul Bass. The film was controversial at the time for covering the subject of drug addiction.
Sinatra gazumped Brando for the lead role & was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for "Best Actor" (Elmer Bernstein's musical score was also nominated alongside another for "Best Art Direction").
The striking Saul Bass poster illustration remains one of the artist's most recognisable compositions. Director Otto Preminger also used Bass to create the animated title sequence for the film, a job which Bass was to undertake on films including some by Hitchcock in the future (a rare example of a film's poster artist being employed in such a fashion).
A serious film, a splendid cast & a poster by one of the American "greats" of 20th century poster design.Poster originally folded but now backed. Poster appears to have been in very good condition prior to backing. There is a small line in the blue lower block of colour which is slightly lighter than the rest but no fault/restoration apparent so this is probably an original print issue. Some touch-ins to foldline wear & several small areas of air-brush to white outer rim.
Overall this is a poster that displays to impressive effect. A classic Saul Bass design.
