WWII HMS Courageous Poster
An original Evening News newspaper stand poster (20"x 30") dating 20th September 1939. This represents an important piece of British naval history, referring to the sinking of the first Royal Navy vessel in WWII, HMS Courageous. HMS Courageous was a converted aircraft carrier & had been on anti-submarine duties in the Western Approaches on the 17th September when it was attacked by the German sub, U-29. The Courageous was struck by two torpedoes & sank in just 15 minutes, 519 lives being lost from the total of 1,260 crew. It is easy to imagine the dawning sense of horror that would have greeted this news in Britain.
A fascinating early piece of WWII Memorabilia.
