Antony and Cleopatra

Original Vic Fair concept painted artwork (22"x 31") for the Quad cinema poster for the historical drama "Antony and Cleopatra" (1972).

Described by Sim Branaghan as "a design genius", Vic Fair was often used as an "ideas man" creating poster designs which were subsequently illustrated by other artists. Fair frequently collaborated in this regard with both Brian Bysouth & Renato Fratini & it was Fratini who was eventually commissioned to illustrate to finished Quad poster (see attached image for reference).

The artwork consists of various pieces of painted tracing paper (colour wash & other painted artwork) affixed to artboard. This was a common way for Fair to build up & develop his designs. Two acetate overlays carrying the text have been added (interesting to note that Fair's typography for the film title has been replicated on the printed Quad too.
