The Wrong Box

Large Vic Fair concept Quad poster artwork (20 1/2"x 24") for the British period comedy "The Wrong Box" (1966).

A star-studded cast including Michael Caine, Peter Sellers, Tony Hancock, John Mills, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore etc graced this comedy film. This is a fine composition & it seems unusual that it didn't make it into print (see the attached for an image of the printed Quad for comparison: https://www.moviepostermem.com/The-Wrong-Box-Poster/60914). With such a glittering cast it is possible that wrangles over billing & profile resulted in the re-fashioning of the design. For an idea of relative value, another concept artwork for this poster was sold at auction by Prop Store for approx £400 (inc Buyer's Premium) in June 2018.

The artwork is laid to Colyer & Southey artboard & consists of several pieces of tissue embellished with pen & ink designs & colour washed. In addition the cast/credits information has been pen outlined with hand-painted infills. Unlike much of Vic Fair's later artworks, everything here is artwork with no photo/photo-mechanical/printed elements.
