The Long Good Friday Poster

Original Yugoslavian cinema poster (18 3/4"x 27") for the British gangster classic, "The Long Good Friday" (LGF) (1980) with rare artwork by Tom Chantrell.

A classic piece of Chantrell illustration with great depictions of Bob Hoskins as gang leader "Harold Shand", standing proud against an image of London's Tower Bridge. Underneath is a dynamic explosion of colour & co-star Helen Mirren. A powerful & dramatic piece of poster art.

This poster art was commissioned by Lew Grade's ITC who produced LGF. On completion of the film, however, ITC were unhappy with the result (the violence & a triumphant IRA) not going down well & a cinematic release was in doubt. George Harrison's Handmade Films stepped in to acquire the film & separately organised the Big Screen release with a completely different poster design (please see: https://www.moviepostermem.com/The-Long-Good-Friday-Poster/61895, https://www.moviepostermem.com/The-Long-Good-Friday-Poster/60471 & https://www.moviepostermem.com/The-Long-Good-Friday-Poster/63330). It is likely that when Handmade acquired the rights to the film, Chantrell's artwork was not included in the deal.

The print run for the Chantrell poster was tiny & only appears to have been done as a UK 1-Sheet, a format destined for export markets. Surviving examples of the Chantrell UK 1-Sheets are rare & sell for thousands on the odd ocasssion they do appear (we show an example from our private collection for reference). Quite how & why Chantrell's ITC poster came to be used in Yugoslavia is a mystery though obviously Western legal influence across borders into a Communist Cold war era country, were weak. This Yugoslavian poster offers a very cost effective way to access one of the rarest of all Chantrell poster artworks.
